IVR Voice Over Exercises

Practice phone-menu prompts that let a caller choose the correct route after one hearing. The drills focus on option numbering, label consistency, manageable lists, and recoverable errors. This is a recorded menu task rather than a conversational voicemail greeting.

Controlled practice

Work through the routine one drill at a time.

Change one variable, listen back, then mark the drill. Progress stays on this device and carries across the language switch. The checklist stores completion flags, never recordings.

1

Destination map

Draw a small menu with three destinations before recording. Check that every spoken option leads to the destination shown in the brief.

2

Label and number pairs

Record each option as one unit. Compare label-first and number-first versions, then use one approved pattern consistently throughout the menu.

3

List spacing

Read the entire list without music. Leave a distinct separation between options while keeping each destination and its number together.

4

Repeat route

Write and record a repeat instruction. Test whether a caller who missed the second option knows how to hear the menu again.

5

Invalid-choice recovery

Record a neutral error message that repeats available choices. Do not blame the caller or imply that an unavailable service can be reached.

6

Telephone playback

Listen on an ordinary phone speaker at a normal level. Ask another person to write down the options and numbers without seeing the script.

Original practice card

Use one fixed example for a fair comparison.

“For appointment times, press one. For an existing booking, press two. To hear these options again, press three.” Now add an invalid-choice prompt: “That option is not available. Please choose one, two, or three.” This fictional menu is a practice brief; it does not represent a connected telephone service.

How should the first pass work?

Read the example and limits before starting, keep a baseline, and work through the six drills above. Make two takes with a recording device you control and note the specific change privately. On playback, check that information remains intact before judging expressive choices. Stop if uncomfortable; no audio upload is needed.

Limits and failure cases

Repair a failed comparison before continuing.

Confirm route labels and key assignments with the menu owner before production. This page does not connect calls or install an IVR system. Never promise a response time, emergency service, or department that the real system does not provide.

Too many simultaneous changes

Changing words, level, position, and pace together makes the comparison inconclusive. Return to the example baseline and retain only the variable specified by the current drill.

Impressions instead of evidence

A more attractive sound does not establish that the task worked. Apply the page-specific playback checks, and ask a listener unfamiliar with the example to recount the information before keeping a take.

Effort used to force completion

The completion record is not an endurance contest. Stop at discomfort, shorten the session, and return to comfortable speech; pain or excessive vocal effort is never a condition for checking a box.

Continue training

Choose the next exercise by the task you need.

Continue with Voicemail Greeting Voice Exercises and Announcer Voice Exercises, or return to the voice imitation game. The game uses its own reference clips and imitation scoring; it does not automatically assess this original practice script.

How should I review ivr voice over exercises?

The listener writes down all three correct label-number pairs and can identify the repeat option. The error prompt must point back to an available choice. A pleasant voice fails the exercise if a number is unclear, a destination changes its name, or the recorded list disagrees with the menu map.

What are the limits of ivr voice over exercises?
